Year 10 - Welcome to the Blog

Now that you are all getting to grips with your coursework I am going to use my blog to support your continuing work, especially through the Easter Holiday. Keep checking here for advice on the section you are working on and if you want to ask a question, use the comment section.

Your work so far

By today you should have completed the following tasks and handed them in:

1. Tally of the questionnaire total results
2. Introduction (first draft)
3. Method of Data Collection (first draft)
4. Graphs

How to improve the 'Introduction'

Remember you can carry on improving your introduction as you go along. Having seen the first draft of most people's introduction, I would suggest you check through the points below to help you improve upon it:

  • Make sure it starts with the aim of investigation
  • You can also include here a few (3-4) sub-aims if you wish. OR you could like the title to the 6Ws exercise we did at the beginning of the coursework. You could show these ideas as a mindmap here?
  • Then go on to introduce Newport. Where is it (needs a map as well as writing)? What sort of a city is it (maybe include a little on its history)?
  • Then do back to the process of redevelopment. What is it? Where else has it happened?
  • True to build an definitions into your writing rather than leaving them standing on their own.
  • Use photos to illustrate your introduction - your own if possible.
How to improve the 'Method of Data Collection' section

Most people have written this section but in many cases it needs organising.

1. Start with a short introductory paragraph describing when and where your data collection took place, also who was involved.

2. Use subheadings for the three different methods of collecting data(Questionnaire, Land-use Survey, Environmental Quality Survey) and perhaps number them them 1-3.
When you present your findings in the next section of the coursework it would be a good idea if you keep the same order for these 3 three methods as you have set our in this section (i.e. Questionnaire first, Land-use Survey next......)

3. For each method make sure you have:

a. Described clearly and succinctly how you collected the data
b. Justified the data collection method - explained why you did it, what you hoped to find out. Using an annotated copy of the questionnaire will help you to justify each question in turn.

4. Some of the methods we used included the whole class, what you did may have just been a small part. Make sure you mention this.

5. Include a map to show where you conducted each of the methods. This should have a title and a key. Keep this simple.

Hello.
Just a question about the enviromental survey maps.
How do we organise the scores of each place on the old excel to get the bar chart you showed us in lesson?
Thankyou
Beth

Hi Beth,
A table similar to that you have on paper should do the job. See me in school if you need a practical demonstration. Good luck.
